Our Story
What happens when the world tells you that you are not qualified—but you decide to prove it wrong?
Unqualified follows Valentina Martinez, a Latina military wife, mother, entrepreneur, and aspiring executive MBA student who applies to an elite business program and is deemed “unqualified.” Inspired by writer, producer, and star Miranda Roldán's own experience, as well as a collection of stories shared by fellow military spouses, the film explores the complicated intersection of ambition, motherhood, identity, sacrifice, and the often-unseen challenges of building a life alongside someone who serves.
Military spouses are often expected to constantly adapt—to move, start over, put careers on hold, navigate deployments, and rebuild their lives around the demands of military service. They are asked to be resilient, flexible, and supportive, while their own ambitions and sacrifices can often go unseen.
At its heart, Unqualified is a story about the labels we inherit, the limits others place on us, and the courage it takes to keep moving forward when the world tells you to stay in your place. It is also a celebration of the villages we build along the way—because for military spouses and families, community is everything.
Unqualified has been accepted into the Sunscreen Film Festival in Tampa, Florida, and Asheville’s Short Film Festival.
